D-Dimer Blood Test

A normal D-dimer rules out a blood clot in low-risk patients. A high result means you may need a scan. It does not mean you have a clot. The test works best to rule clots out.

This is a free, plain-language patient education guide written by Rias Ali, MD, FACC, a board-certified interventional cardiologist. Every guide is grounded in current peer-reviewed evidence and major society guidelines, organized in a way patients can actually use during a visit.
